On April 26, 2013, OAPABA board members and general mebers attended the Asian Reporter’s Annual Foundational Scholarship Banquet. The Annual Scholarship Awards Banquet is an avenue to post exemplary community service, honor our community’s elders, and recognize the hard work and aspirations of young Asian Americans. The event provides outstanding community-outreach and public relations opportunities. Scholarship sponsors are recognized with the names of the scholarship winners. Other recognition given at this event includes the Exemplary Community Volunteer and Most Honored Elder awards, which showcase the many accomplishments of outstanding individuals and community groups.

OAPABA Member Trung Tu to Receive Community Leadership Award by the Judge Learned Hand Awards Committee

On Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at a luncheon at the Benson Hotel (from 11:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m.), OAPABA member Trung Tu will receive the Community Leadership Award from the Judge Learned Hand Awards, presented by the Oregon Area Jewish Committee. Trung Tu is a partner at McEwen Gisvold, LLP, and is also the Northwest Regional Governor for National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. He is a highly recognized litigation and appellate attorney who has garnered such awards as National Asian Pacific American Bar Association’s “Best Lawyers Under 40,” and Oregon Super Lawyers’ Rising Star. Trung has coached Mock Trial at Jefferson High School and held several key volunteer positions with Notre Dame University and its alumni network. He also mentors racial and sexual minority law students and young attorneys and provides pro bono services to the Q Center and to Vietnamese immigrants.

The OAJC Judge Learned Hand Awards honor the memory of Judge Learned Hand, who was recognized as the heir to Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes’ legacy of jurist, philosopher and poet of liberty. Judge Hand was appointed by President Taft as US District Court Judge for the Southern District of New York. He was famous for the extensive range of decisions which he rendered in more than 2,000 cases, especially those centering on questions of constitutional rights and anti-trust legislation. The Learned Hand Award honors leaders in the legal field for professional excellence and contributions to the community. Award recipients are people who embody much of what Judge Hand represented: the rights of the individual and the importance of democratic values in an orderly society. Congratulations, Trung!

OAPABA Board Member Karen Nashiwa Receives Lewis & Clark’s Law School’s Outstanding Mentor Award

OAPABA’s very own Karen Nashiwa is the recipient of the 2013 Hon. Darleen Ortega Outstanding Mentor Award from the law school of Lewis & Clark for her commitment to mentoring law students. Ms. Nashiwa currently serves as OAPABA’s treasurer and is an associate attorney at Folawn Alterman & Richardson LLP. She was nominated by OAPABA’s current Lewis & Clark law school student representative, Anne Nguyen. Congratulations, Karen!

Julia, a partner at Perkins Coie LLP, will receive her award at the Oregon Women Lawyer’s 21st Annual Roberts-Deiz Awards Dinner, on Friday, March 8, 2013. Oregon Asian Pacific American Bar Association (OAPABA) is pleased to announce that OAPABA Board member Beth Bagley won her campaign for the Deschutes County bench, becoming the first female APA (and first elected APA) judge in Deschutes County. Her term will start in January.

Beth Bagley has a distinguished career as a prosecutor. She is a long-time OAPABA member and is serving her second term on the OAPABA Board. Congratulations! We wish Beth all the best in her new position.

2012 NAPABA 24th ANNUAL CONVENTION IN WASHINGTON, DC.

Over 1,700 APA attorneys, judges, and law students from across the Nation gathered at the 2012 NAPABA Conference, “Reaching Monumental Heights.” OAPABA was well-represented at the convention and was proud to celebrate the appointment of Trung Tu as regional governor of the Northwest Region for NAPABA. OAPABA was also proud to celebrate the appointment of Tucker Kraght as regional director of Oregon for NAPALSA, the student chapter of NAPABA. Both Trung and Tucker were sworn into office at the 24th Gala Annual Installation Banquet. Congratulations Trung and Tucker!
